Be careful when removing snow from construction sites and workplaces

The recent extreme weather prompted OSHA to send reminders to employees, employers and the general public of the potential hazards associated with the removal of snow and ice construction sites, from a commercial parking lot and other workplaces.

"Cleaning up after storm involves a series of tasks that can carry risks if done incorrectly or without adequate guarantees," said OSHA regional administrator Cindy Coe in the press release. "We want people to know what these risks are, and what steps you can help protect against these risks."

According to the EEOC, workers and employers should be aware of the danger of following common cleanup work after the storm:

Electric shock from an ungrounded electrical apparatus, or the disabled power linesFalls from a height while erasing ice jams in the gutters, the removal of snow from the roof or ladders, and liftsBeing, so the branch or part of works that, given the weight of ice or snowCarbon of carbon monoxide poisoning when generators powered by gas or equipment without proper ventilationInjuries from guarded chain saws and power tools, or incorrectly tries to clear jams in the snow blowersSlip and decrease accidents accidentsCar when working on or near the roadwaysHypothermia or Frostbite

To prevent accidents and injuries, OSHA recommends:

All lines of consumption, the liveMake land all electrical installations and properly guardedDouble-that the power for the device is disconnected before canceling the jams, clean or maintenanceClearly clear all work zonesClear all walking surfaces of snow, ice and waterUse carefully around the surfaces occupied by the snow or iceEnsure through the effective reduction of the protection of equipmentMake all ladders are maintained and used correctlyUse eyes, face and body equipmentWear reflective clothingUse safe working procedures of protection to limit the duration and gravity of the exposure to the cold

Keep in mind that the injured in clearing snow and ice in the course of the employment of workers shall be entitled to to pay the workers ' and such failure to maintain a safe workplace or place of business may expose employers injury claims, as well.
